Hackers Release PlayStation 3 Master Key Hack

Hackers have unleashed the Sony PlayStation 3 “master key,” allowing the console devices to be jailbroken in order to play pirated games. Sony has been notorious for making its PlayStation 3 console difficult to jailbreak, but experts say this latest hack is equivalent to stealing the master key.

Accessing the inner workings of the PlayStation 3 means people can utilize this gaming console for more than just games. The hackers, known as The Three Musketeers, have leaked out the master key, saying they decided to release the information after they caught word Chinese hackers planned to charge a fee for the code.

“You can be sure that if it wouldn’t have been for this leak, this key would never have seen the light of day, only the fear of our work being used to make money out of it has forced said us to release this now,” the group said in a statement given to The Hacker News. Past jailbreaks have been thwarted by Sony with the release of firmware, re-securing the console to its un-jailbroken state.

The new LV0 key allows hackers and nodders to work around the restrictions Sony places on the console, and can be used to decrypt any future security updates Sony issues. Nate Lawson, a cryptographer and the principal of the Root Labs security consultancy, told Ars Technica the disclosure is a set back for Sony.

“They’re going to have to depend on obfuscation as their primary security measure to keep people from decrypting their updates,” he told Ars. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game that’s now more closely in the favor of the attackers. But Sony has plenty of things they can still do. It’s just another link in the chain.”
The hackers said they had the keys for a while, but decided not to publish them, until the Chinese hackers tried to make a profit.
